During Lockdown's permitted exercise, I cultivated the habit of going out for a walk. I have since made space in my day to maintain this practice. There are so many benefits to be derived from walking. I have found it maintains and improves health, it can also help to improve your powers of observation, it lifts your mood, or just provides space to process thoughts/develop ideas. Another benefit I have discovered recently, if you have a problem getting off to sleep, or getting back to sleep. Taking your mind on the walk you have done, recalling the details in the walk seems to cause me to get to sleep super quick. I probably get 150-200m into the walk and I’m out. Beats counting sheep!
If you can get out into a green space, there’s even more to stimulate your senses. I encourage you to schedule a short walk into your day, see the benefits for yourself.
As a photographer, I’ve found walking to be an invaluable tool for improving my perspective and ability to see images in more mundane scenes. It's amazing how the same location is changed by the seasons, light, elements and even people or the absence of them. I found myself paying more attention to the detail in any given part of a scene, there’s so much to see, texture, colour, form.
I took this picture as it captures the essence of the walking experience.
